White… (Writer’s Digest April Poem A Day Challenge. Day 19) Prompt: “A Color”

Draw a portrait of yourself,
They said when I was five.
Make it look just like you,
Blonde hair, brown eyes, and white.

The hair and eyes were easy.
But I couldn’t color hard enough,
For the white to actually appear,
And white is what they said I was.

Draw a portrait of yourself,
They said when I was six.
Blonde hair and brown eyes, easy,
I was given peach this time for my skin.
I loved the sun, and was actually,
More of a golden brown tan.
So questions about my color arose.
Inquiries about skin and race began.

There were portraits in many shades,
In class, others did just as I.
White, peach, black, brown, red
Nobody’s seemed quite right.

Today we all work from boxes,
Filled with more crayons than twenty-four.
And we know we can mix colors,
With the colors laid down before.

If I color myself brown I’m still “white”
If you color yourself brown, you’re still “black”
We’re all so much more than colors,
In a yellow and green cardboard pack…

Opening The Gift…

There is surface level clarity,
Grasping only at the finger tips.
Of God’s outstretched wisdom,
Idle, leaving unwrapped His offered gift.

Meditation upon truth, neglected,
Many unclaimed revelations.
A loyalty to the comfort of ignorance,
Freedom from accountability and obligation.

But there’s more…

The ease of living enlightened,
The light within the truth.
The peace of a deeper relationship,
With a God, who guides and renews.

Rough surfaces get smoother with time,
Avoiding, and escaping snares becomes easier.
If the gift is opened, and understanding is sought,
Through prayer, and in Gods Word…

Pause And Consider…

If we loved others as we love ourselves

Would that be loving them at all?

——Giving is contingent on having something to give

If we love ourselves as we love our neighbor…What would that look like?

They are one and the same, interchangeable

If we expect to be forgiven the same way that we forgive

Would our forgiveness be fleeting and conditional?

Would we nurse resentments while we live?

If we took more than a moment to examine

What we think and believe

If we paused to consider at all

Would we find unsurfaced contradictions in understanding?

Would we ignore, or seek remedy?

We are connected, one to the other

Just below the surface we intertwine

Contributors to the same light and same darkness

Existing in realms hidden

The notion of our own island is an illusion

Love is the ultimate answer, all inclusive

Love of others, love of self

We are created with purpose

Hatred fuels separation

Poisons the soul

Assaults our brothers and sisters

Builds walls where none should go

Life is so much more than our own desires and designs

I wish you love for right now and all times

Do You Know the Why?

All you see is the surface, skewed in size and appearance

All you recognize is the negativity affecting YOUR existence

All you hear are words, you know not from where they arise

All you examine is a stern face with masked, false eyes

You break the person in pieces and assemble them back all wrong

Hastily assigning a misinterpreted title to a canvas you don’t own

In an instant you are colored by the judgments that you hold

About someone who isn’t you, about someone you do not know

You care not what might be hurting their world, or what pain is in their lives

Compassion is crucial yet lacking, and your mercy never arrives

Behind the anger and the strike against your precious feelings

Is a human being with fears and concerns trying their hand at surviving

Does your inconvenience assign you the right to forget the why?

Do they not deserve the same love and respect you expect others to supply

Will you see beyond the surface deceitful in its display?

Will you consider more than the negativity being hurled your way?

Will you listen and hear words not spoken?

Will you examine the face behind the mask they’ve chosen?

All I’ve seen is your personified annoyance

All I’ve considered is what I perceive as harsh judgment

All I’ve heard is an attitude of selfish unforgiveness

All I’ve examined is your outward rank appearance

I’m sorry, I forgot to consider the why…
