Thought from Hazelden…

This post comes from a daily reading I receive from the Hazelden Foundation. Addiction treatment, recovery literature etc. It really struck me- maybe it will strike a couple of you too!

To use the past without being controlled by it — that is our responsibility to history. Because the past is irrecoverably vanished, it’s sometimes tempting to forget it or to falsify it. But being true to ourselves means being true to our history.

Past cruelties can remain powerful in our lives — yet to take possession of our history means to free ourselves of bondage to past events. Nothing can ever change them. If we are to make the future good, we’ll learn what the past can teach us. But our freedom requires us to make choices based on the needs of the present, not the past.

I can act at every moment in such a way as to honor the past and enhance the future.

You are reading from the book:

The Promise of a New Day by Karen Casey and Martha Vanceburg

Space Cradles Goodbye…

The heavens are still.
Silence is domineering.
Weightless abandon,
To nothingness, gripping.

Planets in the distance,
The earth afar off.
Memories of what’s past,
Stream amid reflective thought.

Freedom in letting go of vain attempts,
Universe shares aesthetic serenity.
No auditory static, just internal echoes,
For the first time, true, untainted clarity…

Power, Love, and Sound Mind…

Waves of thought threaten,
Stable shores of sanity.
God protects my mind…

 2 Timothy 1:7

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Recapture The Rapture…

Other than just shutting down the stimuli,
I don’t know how to shut down the stimuli.
So much coming in all at once,
And I liiiike it!

That’s what the white walls are for. But, I PREFER COLOR!

It’s like when you get a taste of something you like,
And you want more.
You don’t want the feeling to end,
Trying, usually in vain, to sustain it… Fleeting…

Pausing to consider the “friendly”, often proves problematic.
A sense of loss, for the eventual loss ensues.
Acknowledging that it won’t last forever,
Brings the “high” down to unsustainable.

Stimuli remains massive.
Eruptions of thoughts continue.
But I have to fight the mood shift.
And I plan to!!!

It’s hard to recapture the rapture…

Head In The Sand…

I often push away difficult thoughts,
When those very thoughts I should ponder.
The idea of considering the uncomfortable,
Activates my mind’s impulse, to escape and wander.

I keep busy with distracting pursuits,
Ones demanding concentration.
Or ones which simply entertain,
Offering menial stimulation.

Similar to a leak in a roof,
Problems don’t disappear if ignored.
Eventually my choice is to deal with them,
Or drown in the pool on the floor.

Avoidance is dangerously appealing.
I’ve employed habitual denial for so long.
These methods haven’t served me well,
I need: a New voice, New rhymes, New lyrics, and New songs!

Perspective: A Rondeau

It is about perspective, our world view,

Influencing what we accept as true,

Reality, child of our believing,

With passivity we adopt meaning,

Self-centered focus sets reason askew.

Without questioning data we accrue,

Falsity and deception may ensue,

We are hindered by not truly seeing,

It is about perspective.

Looking at your canvas, upon review,

You will see the colors chosen FOR you,

Will your world be painted while you’re dreaming,

Or with eyes open, your view be freeing?

Cognizance of our thoughts is overdue,

It is about perspective…

October 2013

This is my first attempt at writing a Rondeau.  Inspired by “Cubby” http://reowr.wordpress.com/, who has introduced me to some fun challenges.  This particular style was difficult for me.  I suspect that is because I tried to fit such a multifaceted topic into a the confines of a small box!  I’m hoping it makes sense! Thanks for reading!
